Welcome and thank you for visiting my site!  My name is Marsha Owens and I have put together this portfolio so you can learn a little more about me, my educational background, and my work experience.  I am a native of Phoenix and I currently live in Laveen, Arizona, a growing community just 20 minutes south of downtown Phoenix.  Three years ago I returned to college to finish pursuing my bachelor’s degree.  It has been a long road and definitely has not always been easy trying to keep up with both a full time job and as I have done the past two semesters, a full load of classes as well.  But I am proud to say that not only did I stick with it, but I have done well enough to graduate with honors in December 2006.  Completing my degree was a personal goal I set for myself and I am happy that it will soon be fulfilled.  I hope you enjoy this site and that it enables you to learn a little more about me!

The BIS Program

If there is one thing I have learned during my course of studies in Arizona State University’s Bachelor of Interdisciplinary Studies program (BIS), it is what perspective is, just as the BIS program description states.  Just as it is defined above, I have learned to see all of the relevant data in a meaningful relationship.  That is what Interdisciplinary Studies is all about.  Students are able to choose two concentration areas, or disciplines, and integrate them into a suitable academic program that fits their needs.  By combining these disciplines, the BIS student is able to gain a new appreciation and understanding of how differing viewpoints can come together.  In essence, they learn a new “perspective.”

In addition to being able to combine two concentration/discipline areas, Arizona State University also offers an Organizational Studies concentration within the BIS program.  I chose to focus my BIS program within this concentration.  I recognize the benefits of being knowledgeable about today’s organization whether it be governmental, private or non-profit.  The Organizational Studies program allows students to successfully learn about today’s modern organizations in an ever changing world.  Learning about what it takes to successfully operate these modern organizations by focusing on necessary functions such as management, ethical and political issues, constantly changing technology and strategic communication gives these students an edge.
